Important information for Volunteers
HRF welcomes volunteers to join in and support our cause. However, we would like to apprise you that volunteering is a commitment of time and effort made to a child. If you participate in a program and then decide not to continue it, you leave many children disappointed. So, do please give it due thought before you decide to volunteer with us. The time commitment from volunteers is around 2hrs a week 3-4 times a month.
About our earlier volunteer program
HRF’s volunteer program started in 2008 in association with Teach India , an initiative of Times of India. Our volunteer programme uses the framework of the Book Buddy program which is very popular in the US and we have adapted it to the Indian circumstances. The program was used in more than 15 libraries in Bangalore city and was very successful in many of them.
A brief on how it worked
Volunteers were assigned to a library. They had to visit the library once a week for a period of one hour. Five children in the same reading level were assigned to the volunteer. During this hour, the volunteer would read a book from the recommended booklists with the children and conducted the associated activities. The volunteers would interact with the same group of children every week for a period of 12 weeks. The volunteers were trained before they could participate in the program. All efforts were made to assign a volunteer to a library close to his place of work or home.
